The community company Coimhearsnachd Bharraidh agus Bhatarsaidh [CBaB] is a charitable organisation which exists to promote the benefit of the communities of Barra and Vatersay and to advance sustainable community development and rural regeneration. Its mission statement is as follows:

“to develop the economic, social and cultural sustainability of the Barra and Vatersay community by harnessing and promoting the quality of its resources, people and environment, for the long-term benefit of all members of our present and future community”.

The Company focuses its activities in two areas:

1.        To develop income streams from community-owned sustainable community projects which: (i) sustain CBAB, enabling the company to continue to achieve its social and economic objectives for the community and (ii) are available for distribution in support of community projects in accordance with its charitable objects.

2.        To work with a spectrum of organisations to promote and enable community driven development on Barra and Vatersay.

The community company derives its income primarily from the community wind turbine has been set up to maintain the activities of the company in the future and produce a dividend for the community to support projects which fit within the company’s charitable aims. The micro-fund administered by the Area Forum is intended to fund smaller projects whereas larger projects are administered by Foundation Scotland.

Awards are restricted to £500. Awards can be for events, educational training or continued personal development which benefits the wider community. Charities, organisations and groups will be awarded based on their funding needs and community benefit.

The distribution of the micro-grant by the Area Forum will follow the same guidelines as followed by Foundation Scotland. A sum of £5,000 will be available in Spring and subsequently in Autumn totalling £10,000 annually. The aim is to review all applications within a 3-week timeline.
